TOMBOY aka Tomas Barfod (DJ, Über-producer and drummer of Danish future disco band WHOMADEWHO) is one of the most talked about guys in the new Electronic scene. He has done four euphorically received solo maxisingles on Gomma and this year has also been asked to do a single for Tiga’s Turbo label, Get Physical and Kitsune. Now its time for his solo debut album: SERIOS are 14 moody, mellow, but freaked out “Spaceship” Electrosongs. Inspired by 70ies Cosmic disco, 90ies “Warp” – Electronica and the funky side of Rave culture.

But SERIOS isn’t a dance album even if it consists of elements from the dance universe. Tomboy is a tricky guy: he uses common clubmusic ingredients (acid lines, disco breaks, rave synthesizers, drum machines) in a totally unusual way. He plays the drums and reworkes them with electronic techniques. Creating this very personal sound.

SERIOS is sleazy chilled out music – but far away from any Chill Hop Lounge. And even if it was made by a “real” musician and studiowizzard the music never sounds too clean and perfect.

BOX CODAX is the long awaited solo project of FRANZ FERDINAND‘s musical mastermind Nick McCarthy. BOX CODAX is a project of him and his longtime friend Alexander Ragnew. “Only an Orchard Away” is their debut album. A collection of songs, often romantic and whimsical nostalgia, at other times scrappy and punky: this is an honest and genuine collection of witty pidgin English lyricism, dark humour and the award winning song writing of a pop genius presented out of context in these lo-fi recordings.

Only An Orchard Away has an sharp old school electronic edge, at times like DIY electro hip hop and at others similar to DEVO. European folk (music) and Leonard Cohen stumble about on the tracks but with Alexander’s haunting tones, this is always distinctively BOX CODAX.

It has taken a long time to pull the Box Codax album together – no wonder really, considering that one of guys is a reclusive writer and the other a heavy touring musician. Nick’s musical career took him to study classical double bass and piano at The Conservatoire in Munich/Germany. After his studies he moved to Glasgow and created Franz Ferdinand together with Alex Kapranos.

The first single is the song “Naked Smile”. Featuring a remix by Jonny Wilkes from Glasgows OPTIMO (aka NAUM GABO) and one from 2006’s hottest new producer; METRONOMY, who tackles the track with a 6/8 rhythm and prog rock keys.

Normally it’s a great honour if a big pop band like Franz Ferdinand asks an underground producer to remix a song. If then also Röyskopp, Yello, Annie, Mylo and even Roxy Music call the guy and ask for a mix you can be quite sure that the producer must be more than just one of the many new one hit club wonders. And if next this artists starts to record his solo album and people like Soulwax, The Rapture and Radio 4 want to sing on it, it’s not unlikely that there is something special going on.
All this is happening to Swiss born, but Berlin-based disco producer, DJ and painter Robi Insinna aka Headman.

You can easily call Robi one of the leading figures of the new disco movement. His first HEADMAN album “It Rough” was released back in 2003 on the small German label Gomma and set new standards in club circles. It was immediately nominated “album of the month” in Jockey Slut Magazine/UK and called one of the most important and innovative albums of the year by DJ’s such as Trevor Jackson, Ivan Smagghe or even Hell. The title track (with a Chicken Lips re-work on the 12”) caused a huge fuss in clubs around the world.

Since then he has been building up a worldwide underground reputation as remixer, producer and DJ – regularly playing “hot” clubs like Bugged out or Optimo in the UK as well as Tribeca in New York and FUN in Berlin. Besides the records on his main label Gomma, Headman has also recently been asked to publish a single on London’s Output records. He also started an own little imprint (Relish records) and from time to time he puts out records under his moniker Manhead.

But his main project is the HEADMAN music: The Headman style is a very special version of (balearic) Disco, combining the organic sound of 70ies Leftfield Disco and Rock with the energy of 90ies house.

The new album includes songs Robi recorded with Stephen Dewaele from Soulwax/2many DJs (he performed on the first single ROH), Matt Safer from The Rapture, Anthony from Radio 4 and Erol Alkan from London’s TRASH Club. The remix for the first single ROH was done by Trevor Jackson aka Playgroup. The second single MOISTURE includes two club mixes by Robi himself and the kicking MUSTAPHA 3000 remix.

WHOMADEWHO. Three guys from Denmark that have a very own sound:
They play DISCO. But not so much mixing it with (Post) Punk and New Wave like so many other bands right now. WhoMadeWho use lot more influences: from Surfrock to Folk to 70ies Funk. And sometimes it feels like the guys heard a dose of Italodisco and Cosmic tapes before recording.

One of the interesting things about WhoMadeWho is the fact that all the three members have totally different backrounds. Tomas Barfod – the drummer is known as one of Skandinavia’s best electronic DJ’s. Jeppe Kjelleberg , guitar player, used to live in NYC where he was established in the local Avantgarde Jazz scene. He even recorded an album with former Lounge Lizards guitar player DAVIS TRONZO. And Tomas Hoffing the bass player is also member of danish garage rock band Garbo.

What is HILTMEYER INC? In a review, New York City’s Top–Shop TURNTABLE LAB puts it the easy way: „it’s just the hottest raw electronic disco thang.“

Hiltmeyer is well known in the Munich club scene: a few years ago for being an excellent record dealer, always hanging out in the streets and clubs, and now for being an excellent DJ at the Gommagang parties. He was raised in a part of Munich where a lot of Munich techno producers like Zombie Nation, Richard Bartz or the Disko B/ Chicks on Speed people pass their time: Sendling.

Hiltmeyer was always a music fan. By 13 he started to get into the sound that was called “Cosmic Music” in Southern Europe: a dance music movement that was developed in Northern Italy back in the early 80s and ruled the scene from North Italy through Austria and South Germany till the Mid 90s. The original Cosmic as Hiltmeyer Inc likes it (he owns a huge mix tape collection) is a very funky special way to select and mix Italodisco B – Sides, Afro funk and Protoelectro. In his own productions Hiltmeyer Inc takes this Italian cosmic disco attitude and translates it into his fresh personal style with a dirty, futuristic, techno flavor. Pornotrance from outta space!

Hiltmeyer works with an MPC wich ususally gets used by Hip Hop producers and has only very low–key equipment. But his first releases worked well: The first tracks “Narkotik!” and the 12“ called „I come from München Sendling and I don’t give a fuck!“ were a favorite of Kompakt’s Tobias Thomas and Parisian DJ Chloe.

Cover by original Munich artists WON abc – the Jesus is an original acrylic painting. (WON recently got fame in Street art/ Graffiti circles for painting an 8 meter piece on the indoor wall of Sri Lanks’s biggestz male jailhouse!)

THE RAMMELLZEE is a NYC – Icon. Something like the “Godfather of street art”! Known as one of the originators and still leading figure of contemporary underground art, street culture, Graffiti and Electro/ Hip Hop (his BEAT BOP single with Jean Michel Basquiat and K – Rob is one of the most important original rap tracks ever – reissued this year on MoWax and Soul Jazz). He was featured in all important Hip Hop films of the 80ies (“Wildstyle”…) and worked with people like Fab 5 Freddie, Michael Holman, Futura 2000, Phase 2 and was (with his partner Basquiat) one of the first graffiti artists accepted by the “official” art world. Over the last few years he got quite a heavy reputation – especially in Japan and in the US street art scene – for developing his own special universe („Gothic Futurism“). It consists of big human size fantasy muppets (walk-ins), the LETTERRACERS (figurative skateboards) and also the original collage paintings he had invented back in the 80ies. But this is not a comeback! The Rammellzee has been already doing lots of new stuff recently including styling NYC’s SUPREME skate/ fashion company’s shops worldwide in 2003, doing new exibitions and performing several concerts in Japan with (Japan’s Nr. 1 Hip Hop – DJ) DJ Kensei and NYC’s Death Comet Crew. Japnese leading mag RELAX and UK’s DAZED & CONFUSED recently came out with some big (cover) storys about him.

After the 2003 No Wave/ Punkfunk/ NYC – revival – wich Gomma preceeded with it’s 2000’ ANTI NY compilation – the Rammellzee’s album could be a next level. A futuristic development of the original No Wave and Post Punk attitude – the angry, superenergetic NYC rawness versus an international new school of electronic producers…this is not a revival of 20 years old music! This is NOW – sound! We feel it fits perfect into 2004.
The Rammellzee was looking for some fresh musicians who could help him to record a soundtrack for his „Gothic futurism“ universe. He met the Munich based Munk guys in 99 when they licensed a track from him for ANTI NY – compilation and were introduced by common friend Stuart Argabright (aka the Dominatrix aka Death Comet Crew). Together they decided to realize this project on Gomma including fresh producers from different parts of the world. The eleven tracks have been made in 2002 and 2003 in NYC, Munich, Tokio, San Francisco and Berlin. Rammellzee took them as a basis for his „speaches“. It’s GOTHIC FUTURISM. He has a lot to say.
